I know hockey is a rough game and players are often battered, bruised and bloodied numerous times throughout their careers but the Red Wing's Gustav Nyquist's spearing Minnesota's Jared Spurgeon in the face is one of the worst intent to injure moves I've ever seen.  Hopefully the NHL sees it the same way and hammers him with a minimum 10 game suspension for this type of dangerous bullshit.

Here's the video and don't worry, there's actually no blood albeit solely by dumb luck. If the blade had been two inches higher it would have been a lot more gory and almost certainly career ending.

Lay the hammer down, Player Safety. Lay the hammer down.

snowywolfowl: (Beer!)
Yes. Yes we do. And we need to talk about beer.

Most of you know this but its really hard to drink a full can of beer after throwing it at the back of a Baltimore Oriole player's head while he's making an outfield catch. It's disrespectful to the men and women of the brewing company who made that beer, the truck drivers who transported it to the stadium, and the concession stand employees who took a day's pay for it.

Now most of the news focused on how close it came to the guys noggin, but not me. I focus on the important stuff on this blog. That beer lay there, its golden nectar pouring from its opened top into the outfield, and all I could see was disrespect and cowardice. At no point did the person who threw that beer attempt to retrieve it. Beer is sacred, Jays fans. If you throw a beer at a player than you should be immediately diving headfirst from the bleachers and joyously chugging that beverage as the opposing team, security and the police honour you with punches, pepper spray and the sweet song of a taser.  To do anything less dishonours the sacred memory of all those whose alcohol fuelled accomplishments live on through story, song, and Youtube videos.

Turn in your man card, sir. Turn in your Canadianness. No, turn in your very liver itself for denying it the challenge of keeping you alive from acute alcohol poisoning.

Shame. Ye verily Shame.

*shakes head in solemn sadness at the grave dishonour done to the brew that is true*

Even when they yell "f**k off" to bystanders who are calling 9/11 to get them off the ice before they go over a hydroelectric dam. Really, we are the nicest people on the planet.

And this people is why I say "stay off the f***ing ice, you idiots" to random individuals trying this type of stupidity. Although why anyone would get onto ice anywhere near Peterborough (or anywhere in Southern Ontario) this winter is beyond me.

Oh well. They may not have even been eligible to win a Darwin Award due to their age but with talent like this its only a matter of time I'm sure.

So work is done and my weekend is here so how do I feel like celebrating? By firing up the computer to watch some Black Friday Fight videos!

I mean seriously where else, other than the running of the bulls in Spain, can one watch idiots subject themselves to the type of trampling injuries one usually associates with panicked crowds and not feel guilty about it? If these people want to camp out in the cold for hours for the priviledge of  being beaten, trampled, tased, punched, stabbed, shot, indebted and otherwise compromised then the least I can do is dress up in a toga and be entertained by their suffering.

What?  I look good in a toga and you know the Romans would be LOVING this. ;-)

Seriously I hope the BC conservation authorities can find these guys and hit them with the full force of the law. This is so not ok.

At least it looks like the poor thing was able to go about its business after these yokels were finished dishonouring the name of Canada.

This was released in 1981 and I never new about it? Something tells me this might be the oddest movie I've seen since I watched that North Korean monster movie last year.

Somehow I'm having trouble believing it but its on imdb.com and the CBC did a feature on it, so maybe? If it is then this has to be perhaps the greatest Darwin Award every filmed!

I am so definitely renting this.

To the person you overheard George, tell them not to worry. Canada is NOT going to break away from the United States, at least not until Yellowstone erupts and covers North America in molten lava and hot, choking volcanic ash. They have no need to worry about us becoming the separate country we already are so they can just sit back and get ready to enjoy the mass extinction of the human race.

Cheers! :-)

...and since I am taking the high road "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang will not be played. No, not at all and you have no idea how hard that is.

I admit that I will miss his enlightening videos informing the world whenever someone he hated "entered Hell" and bizarrely infantile need for attention that led him to protest funerals of people he had absolutely no interactions with. This of course leads me to wonder if his own church will be making a video depicting his own entry into the flaming blast furnace underground and protesting his funeral. Not that I personally wish him ill but since his own church excommunicated him I will be greatly disappointed if they don't. One would think they'd have the decency to give him a right proper send off.*

In truth though (and I am copying this word for word from a comment I left at [livejournal.com profile] bonnie_halfelvn journal that I left there. She posted a great link about the most likely effect the WCB has had. I recommend reading it),  I always saw him and his family/cult as a group of sad little people condemned through their own actions to never add anything joyous to the world. Instead of bringing joy and kindness they made it their life's work to show a theology where in the afterlife they get to sit by a flaming pool drinking mai tais while the Great Executioner in the Sky sadisticly tortures everyone that isn't them. I don't despair of ever turning them from their beliefs, rather when confronted with such hate I'd rather shake the hand of everyone they personal despise and say "See you in their Hell, my friend!" because it would be a far better afterlife than anything they imagine.

*As far as send offs go I want a Viking funeral. It's not my first point but it's just too hard to get my neighbours to build me a proper pyramid.

It's pronounced "Can-a-da". We do not pronounce it "Can-eh-dee-ah". I have no issues when recording artists or comedians, or people who honestly don't know pronounce it that way but you're a news media organization. If you say "that's how they pronounce it" and I know its wrong, it just provides me with a good reason to doubt your journalistic accuracy with other stories.

Anyway you cut it this is one epic Darwin Award attempt.

Roads are for cars. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. When you forget this and run pedestrians off the sidewalk from behind the pedestrians tend to get a little mad at you.

And yes, I do apologize for asking if you were stupid. It was a waste of both your time and mine to require you to state the obvious. Its not like you were going to learn from the experience.

And finally, why would somebody drive on the sidewalk to get six feet closer to the door they wanted to walk through? The parking spot directly in front of the door, the one that's not on the sidewalk, was open. My head hurts trying to comprehend this thought process.

1 . To the guy driving the car with less than one inch of ground clearance between the asphalt and his body frame:

"This is construction season in Northern Ontario, not the Daytona 500. Wouldn't it be easier on the paint job to just remove the fancy racing skirt thingies than to just grind them down going from red light to red light?"

2. To the person who demanded my name because he's "looking" for someone:

"What the hell? You don't even know who you're looking for? How about instead of picking fights you get a job, go to school and get a damn life, ya idiot."

Instead I just said "Jimmy Hoffa". He didn't get the reference. No surprise there.

3. To the teenagers hooking up the shopping cart to their bicycles so they can have a Ben-Hur style chariot race:

*THUMBS UP!!!! THUMBS UP!!! THUMBS UP!!!!*

Seriously, there is no possible way that couldn't be entertaining. I just wish they'd managed to get it going while I was walking by.

I just tried to watch that controversial movie trailer that provoked the embassy stormings in the Middle East, and I am having a very hard time formulating an intelligent and coherent response to it.

Seriously, I can't remember the last time I watched something so racially offensive. I think it both doubled my blood pressure and halved my IQ points.

Ok, so Pauline Marois is an idiot who leads a party hell bent on trampling on the rights of non-francophones, a leader who actively wants to politically disenfranchise people who might vote against her, and who, if she had her way, would lead Quebec over an economic cliff. That is not, has never been, nor ever will be an excuse to take a gun to her election victory speech and kill people.

Time for a reality check here:

The whole separatism line isn't going to happen, not with 28% of the Quebec population supporting it. Besides, Quebec's social safety network is paid for by Ontario manufacturing, Alberta oil, Newfoundland and Labrador hydro-electric power, and every other form of revenue Canada creates*. A Parti Quebecois government usually hurts the Quebec economy because of the number of businesses that leave Quebec for other parts of Canada over the uncertainty they foster, but that pain would be NOTHING compared to Canada's payments stopping. Seriously, if you thought Quebec was crazy with the students rioting over tuition costs, no worries. The riots and demonstrations that would hit an independent Quebec after their social system collapsed through Greek like austerity programs, would be far greater.  After all, they aren't going to leave Canada without their share of the debt, and I'm sure just about every economic deal they have with other provinces would need to be renegotiated. Add in their low birthrate and need for immigration and you have another long term problem they probably haven't given much thought to. Retiree's NEED younger workers to pay into those systems, unless the PQ vision of a old age pensions involves cat food surprise.

So that's the economic side of why Quebec separatism is a non-starter. As for the trampling on English, well, legally she is allowed to do it, and heavily required to to play to her party's base. That being said, forcing businesses with more than 10 people in it to only use French could cause the owners to relocate, and would put a chill on business creation. I just can't see how making it hard for new immigrants to get hired helps the economy. That is of course assuming any non-French speaker ever chooses Quebec when immigrating to North America.

As for the law they want to pass making it impossible for a non-Francophone to run for office, petition the legislature, or vote, I think that one would go all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, and be struck down as unconstitutional. Think about it. We have some citizens, born and raised in Canada, who only speak Inuktituk, Dene, Cree, or French. Should they be denied the right to petition their provincial government for redress solely because they don't speak English? That's insane.

I get why voters decided to get rid of Jean Charest's Liberals after 3 terms, and realize that it was time for a change. So, let's be real little democrats here and let Quebec have the change it voted for. And when they see just how badly the PQ bungles things, they'll take her out the only way that is proper.

With ballots, not bullets.

*To be fair Quebec also pays into that program of transfer payments, which are used to equalize the general standard of living across Canada.

So Boston Bruin Milan Lucic didn't get suspended for nailing Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller.  Uh, ok. I guess everyone that is afraid the NHL is legislating the violence out of the game doesn't have to worry now, since NOTHING provokes a bench clearing brawl more quickly than running a goalie.

For anyone wondering why goalies need special protection imagine yourself trying to hit a 95 mph fastball in a baseball game...and then being tackled full force by a 300 lb football player just as you're swinging. Remember most goaltenders are not as big or strong as the other members on the ice, and all that padding is more to protect against the puck rather than contact. Unfortunately now that it appears you can take out the opposing team's starting goalie (who is often considered to be the most important/hardest to replace player) for a mere two minute penalty I suspect there will be some serious runs taken at goalies.  Give any team tacit approval and they'll take it...

For those wondering about the hit here's the video. Lucic (in black) makes absolutely no attempt to avoid Miller (in white), which he's required to do since there is no chance of him getting to the puck first. If this was a defenceman or forward this would be fine since they expect to get hit, but goalies? Nah. This was a cheap shot, pure and simple.
