I have a small confession to make. I love anything to do with aviation. Most of the time its great learning about the history and performance of various planes, pilots and systems. Unfortunately sometimes its not so great like the recent plane crash at Shoreham.

As I always do I'll wait for the official report but from the video it looks like he started the loop too low and just ran out of altitude. What's pushes this to the next level is that he hit the motorway directly killing at least 7 people.

Amazingly the pilot is still alive but in critical condition. Don't ask me how.

Oy. I'm in the same boat as you. I love airplanes and airshows and it's always heartbreaking when something like this happens. :-(

Wow, after watching that... how on earth is the pilot alive?

What an awful crash.

I have no clue how someone survives that type of crash. I would have thought even if hitting the tail end first dissipated some of the energy he'd still be torn up by sliding into the cars at flight speed.

This is probably the worst air show crash I've seen since Rammstein. I hate to say or think it but this is the type of crash where you wish he'd nose dived into any of the nearby fields instead of bullseyeing the road. Not that I ever want a pilot killed but you just don't want people hit on the ground like sitting ducks.

Oh, I totally agree with you. The pilot knowingly takes risks when he or she does what they do. The people on the highway didn't sign up for that.

Do you know if he ejected?

I wondered about that but in lieu of not knowing for certain I'm thinking he probably didn't. I didn't see an ejection or a chute and if I remember correctly the Hawker Hunter doesn't have a modern zero/zero seat. At that altitude he probably wouldn't have even had the chute open even if he did.

Actually I just looked it up on BBC. No, he was pulled out of the wreckage. Again, how he was still alive I'll never know.

The death toll is rising too unfortunately. Even worse is that they haven't physically removed the wreckage so they think its likely there are still bodies under it. Like I said its probably the worst air show disaster since Rammstein.
