Changing pickups is a hit-and-miss move, I think. You can research how the ones you think you want sound, but then they'll sound different on your guitar, through your amp, with your fingers on the strings.
I swapped out the muddy but gutsy Epiphone p/u's in my old Sheraton II for a pair of Kent Armstrong vintage p/u's. They were too classy, had no personality and I wish I'd gone for a pair of Gibson Burstbuckers. But then, who's to say how they would have sounded? It was just not a great guitar. I sold it and do not miss it.
