There is nothing to debate here. This cannot be allowed to become normalized behaviour.

Lugenpresse!?! Souless golem!?! Hail Trump, with Nazi forearm salutes!?!

No. No. No. No. No.

NO.

Not acceptable. Not acceptable at all.

Its stuff like this that makes worries that Trump will start internment camps for Muslims and others a legitimate worry for so many people. Indeed, its stuff like this that makes America remind me of the Weimar Republic. They've already had a charismatic business elite mobilize fascist radicals to gain economic power and now we will likely get to see them lose control of the attack dogs to all our dismay. You can't just look directly at a camera and say "Stop it" after making demagoguery the whole point of your campaign. It doesn't work that way. It NEVER works that way.

So going forward I will not be using the term "alt-right" to describe this bullshit. Instead I'm going to call it what it is. Fascism, Nazism and White Supremacy. Ugly words yes, but the only words fitting for such ugly thoughts from such ugly souled people. "Alt-Right" implies some sort of alternative right wing philosophy, like "Red Tory" or "Reagonomics". Whatever one thought of those ideas at least they were legitimate ones. What this video showed was not and cannot be afforded the comfort of "oh its just a variation of classical conservatism".

As for the above point, I am not debating it. Trump is the Republican president elect, and he, and his party, have given voice to NAZIS. That is on him, the Republicans, and everyone who voted for the Trump/Pence ticket. Is everyone who voted for it racist? No, of course not and it would be wrong to even subtly imply it. There were a lot of legitimate factors that contributed to how the race turned out, and a more reasonable Republican candidate could have absolutely won against Clinton. But if a person only voted that way because they didn't like Clinton, or were just angry and couldn't be bothered to read up on who was supporting Trump, then they definitely helped create this problem and need to become part of the solution to protect the core values of Western democracy.

My niece and nephews, who are native born white Americans, deserve better than this, as does EVERY American, and citizen of the world, regardless of creed, faith, colour, ethnicity or whatever. I'd also like to think that my late great grandfather didn't spend several years of his life being terrorized on merchant ships in the North Atlantic by these Neo-Nazi's idols only to see his great grandchildren say "Ancient history, old man. Fuck it". If there was ever a time, a place and a way to honour the Greatest Generation than this is it. This is the time.

Don't let Nazism become Normal.

Please.

sing it, sister!

My new motto is "Show up."

I'm not going to let any of this become "normal." For your niece and nephews, for my friends and family with kids, for myself, my fiancé, and everyone on this fucking planet, I am not going down without a fight.

A good motto to have and one I'm happy to adopt.

I don't get a vote in the American elections but the Conservatives here in Canada always look south for their inspiration, and I would not be surprised in the least if they too embrace fascism as their platform. They will not be getting my vote or support, let me tell you.

Trump already disavowed them and his daughter Ivanka and her husband are Jewish.

A day late and a dollar short, and ironic but it changes nothing on the ground. In America today neo-Nazi fascists feel empowered by the President elect, whose entire campaign has been fuelled by hatred of the "other", hatred they feel empowered to act upon.

That is what matters and that is what Republicans and Trump voters need to fix. Until they do that they are just part of the problem.

I wish he would spend a fraction of the energy disavowing these people that he has spent on Hamilton and SNL.

[identity profile] snowywolfowl.livejournal.com 2016-11-23 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thinking long term as Trump I have ask why would he? SNL, Hamilton, Bill Maher, almost all of late night TV, most mainstream journalists*, etc have been anti-Trump, or as his fascists supporters would like to scream, "LUGENPRESSE!!!!!". Simple fact is he needed people of that ilk to win the base, and get the vote out. Sure he disavowed them in the tepid fashion I expected but it doesn't change the fact he's still got like minded people in his inner circle. That will count more to neo-Nazi leadership than a small dog biscuit thrown to the press, and the smart ones, the ones who don't wear their sheets out in public, will get it.

*I'm only talking about the journalists and commentators. The networks themselves gave waaaaaaay too much free advertising to him, even after it was clear that the joke was no longer funny.

Oh, I know why he isn't disavowing them strongly. Which is part of my problem. Plus as they say, actions speak louder than words, and appointing Bannon was pretty loud.

[identity profile] snowywolfowl.livejournal.com 2016-11-24 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to apologize for my tone if it seemed sharp. I know you know what I meant. Its just, Nazis. Nazis, man. I know they will always exist, I just didn't think the US, the land of the brave and home of the free would fall to their ilk.

[identity profile] padawansguide.livejournal.com 2016-11-25 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, I understand. We haven't fallen yet. But we are giving this minority a voice and legitimizing them instead of treating them like the fringe wackos they are. It concerns me that our president-elect, who claims to disavow them, is spending more time shouting down things like Hamilton and SNL, then shouting these people down. If he really cared, I think he would do that, since they are committing these acts in his name. But clearly he doesn't, because he isn't. And I also think you are right that they are a part of his base. And Bannon's base. So basically this sucks.

Also, since I'm in the mood to put myself into the shoes of his fascist neo-Nazi supporters I'm sure they'd be happy to spare Donald Trump's daughter and her family as a gift to the great man.

*shrug*

Just because they are vile, hate filled people doesn't mean they would be ungrateful for his help furthering their cause. Nazi's can be very polite and cultured people, after all.
