So far today I've read two stories on CBC that have ended with people missing and presumed dead, so here's my rant. I'll keep it short and sweet.

People, its spring time. STAY. OFF. THE. ICE!!!!!

You go through the ice into a river and you are dead. If you don't get pulled out quickly you've got maybe five-ten minutes tops before you lose the ability to get out, and in 15 you're probably drowned.

Jesus what a lousy way to go.

And again I realize that for many of you the only ice you'll stand on is either a skating rink or an ice cube that fell out of your drink. Still this type of senseless loss drives me batty every single year.

:( I feel the same way about people who drive without seatbelts. Well, not quite the same way. But I knew a guy who died because he drove *on ice* (Texas ice, very no bueno) on a highway. Senseless. :(

Yeah people who don't wear seat belts or helmets drive me nuts too. Those results are not a pretty sight (personal experience, sadly) and like you said are senseless.

And black ice on a road is no laughing matter no matter where it forms. I was thinking more about river ice and last I checked I don't think the Rio Grande freezes. :-)

Which begs the question has it ever frozen over? I'm honestly asking. I'm not familiar with the craziest Texas weather in history.

I'm okay with it when it's adults; I tend to just to think "Darwin Award" and move on. Most people should have, at some point, learned that ice breaks, melts, and becomes water. Water is something not to be messed with - ergo, don't mess with ice either. So, it really only gets to me when it's kids or people that have the mental capacity of a child.

Around here, we are having yet another CO warning because a Dad thought it was a good idea to have a gas generator running inside a house since it was too noisy for the neighbors when it was outside. All seven members of the family - the Dad and his kids- were killed. Unfortunately, we've had a few of those type cases around here.

Yeah that happens every year here too. Someone runs a generator or a bbq inside during a power outage and several ppm of CO later, they're gone along with everyone else in the house.

Its just sad every year with the ice because its an equal opportunity killer. Kids, adults, pets, etc. At least a few years ago I was able to chase some kids off the river where I was living before they went through. If they'd gone through they'd have probably surfaced somewhere in Michigan, if at all.
